IN THIS
EPISODE.

How do you move to New York with no hospitality experience and end up with a hand in a dozen bars? I sat down with Thatcher Shultz, a hospitality developer with 12 venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Thatcher grew up on an island in Maine with about 420 people and built an automotive e-commerce business in Seattle, then moved to New York with one goal: open a bar. We talk about the off-market sports bar he and his partners turned into a hidden cocktail lounge above a Five Guys, why he renovates a venue before it fades, how his nightclub Virgo honours the club Provocateur, the deal where a former tenant threatened his life, and why a man who sells drinks for a living chooses not to drink much.

His advice for anyone moving to a big city: build a small cushion, get scrappy and commit to something.
